Tempo Demon Hunter was hit with a hell of a lot of nerfs over the course of Ashes of Outland. It’s still a pretty damn strong one though. Early game: It’s an aggressive deck. You’re a Demon Hunter. You want to be getting stats on board as early as possible and whacking your enemy’s face. A minion like Battlefiend is a great turn 1 play, as it synergises with the class’ Hero Power Demon Claws. Demon Claws is easy to slot into turns too, since it’s only 1 mana. Remember all those Genn Greymane decks plaguing the meta in the Witchwood? Crimson Sigil Runner is another excellent tempo play, reminiscent of Kobold Librarian as a 1 drop that can draw a card. Twin Slice is 1 mana for 2 attack for your Hero, but you might want to save them for different turns so you get multiple activations on minions like Satyr Overseer and Battlefiend. Damage is always good though, so hit face as much as you can. Mid game: Keep on developing that board. Sometimes, you’ll want to remove enemy minions with your Hero’s own attack power to keep your minions alive - you’re unlikely to be killed before you kill the enemy. The most common way you’ll lose matches is by running out of fuel, so keep on playing your minions and attacking. Umberwing is particularly strong alongside your Demon Claws, since 2 attack from your Hero has significantly more effect than just 1. Of course, you’ve got all your other cheap minions to be playing - you don’t want to be floating mana at all at this point in the game so get as much played as possible before your enemy’s removal comes into the game. Late game: Uh oh. You’ve run out of cards, haven’t you. Oops. Not to worry though - hopefully by this point in the game your enemy is on death’s door. Skull of Gul’dan is your most important asset at this point. Given how cheap the rest of your cards are, you might well have got it to the left of your hand and become able to get the Outcast discount on them. This’ll reduce the cards’ cost by 3, often making them all immediately playable. Other closing plays include Glaivebound Adept, who can hit the enemy face for 4 damage after your Hero attacks, and Metamorphosis, which deals a total of 10 damage over the course of a couple turns. Hopefully with all these done, you’ve managed to finish your opponent.

Battlefiend, as mentioned, works great alongside your Demon Claws Hero Power, as well as the likes of Twin Slice early on, boosting its attack all the while. 2. Blazing Battlemage is a 1 mana 2/2, which isn’t quite as snowball-y as Battlefiend, but does a great job of trading anyway. 3. Umberwing summons 2 mini minions, whilst giving your Hero the chance to attack and start dealing damage to the enemy face.
Tempo Demon Hunter tips, combos and synergies
Here’s a few combos and interactions to look out for with Tempo Demon Hunter. Of course, once we’ve seen the deck played a bit more, we’ll keep you updated.
- Metamorphosis swaps your Hero Power to ‘Deal 4 Damage’. However, you can use your original Demon Claws Hero Power on the same turn if you have the mana, meaning you can technically sneak in a use of both abilities in a single turn. This also takes effect the opposite way after the second use of the 4 damage Hero Power, so count for lethal carefully - you’ve got one more damage than you think.
- Glaivebound Adept only deals 4 damage if your Hero has attacked on the same turn - look out for the yellow border around the card in hand to make sure the Battlecry will go off.
- Satyr Overseer is best played alongside an attack from your Hero, to ensure you gain the summon of a 2/2. This can be achieved through your Demon Claws power, or by the likes of Umberwing and Twin Slice.
- Kayn Sunfury acts as a brilliant finisher against control decks who think they’ve turned the corner. It can get 3 damage past Taunts with its Charge, but also lets all your other minions and Hero go face. Illidari Felblade is a fantastic card for most points in the game, especially if you activate its Outcast ability. This basically lets you clear an enemy threat for free, and leave an undamaged 5/3 on board ready to go face next turn.
- Blade Dance can clear the enemy’s board when they’re looking to pull off some value trades. The synergies with your Hero Power are clear to see, but Twin Slice, Chaos Strike, and Umberwing can’t be forgotten.
